Highlights of VSI SC Senior Championships

 

Thursday

In the 200 Medley Relays, PSDN (Haley, Harris, McClintock, Potts) started the meet off with a new Meet Record in 1:48.38 on the women's side and CGBD (Madaras, Cross, Wilcox, Harkins) set a new Meet/VSI Record with a blistering 1:33.50 on the men's side.  In the 1650 Freestyle events, Anne Myers (NOVA) achieved a USA Swimming Spring Champs cut with a winning time of 16:47.72 and Edward Lutterbein (NOVA) achieved a USA Swimming Spring Champs  (18&Y) cut while winning in 15:45.32.  In the 200 Freestyle Relays, QDD Women (Cavalier, Perks, Ameen, Harrison) took Gold with a new Meet Record of 1:37.06 and CGBD Men (Cross, Harkins, Richardson, Madaras) established another new Meet/VSI Record of 1:24.10.

Friday

The evening began with Anne Myers' (NOVA) victory in the 200 Freestyle (1:50.81, a Spring Champs (18&Y) cut) followed by David Walters' (TPHN) trashing of the Meet/VSI and AFC Pool Records he set last year (1:35.07) - the swim of the meet!  In the 100 Breaststroke events, WAC's Meaghan Holloway grabbed the top spot in 1:04.34 (Spring Champs (18&Y) cut) and CGBD's Joel Cross earned 1st Place with a 54:71 (Spring Champs cut), just off his Meet/VSI Record swim in Prelims (54:51, which bested a 17 year-old time by JJ Freitag (RVAA))!  In the 100 Butterfly, Kristin Cihoski's (UNAT) Spring Champs cut of 55.58 was enough to win and David Walters (TPHN) doubled up with another Meet Record in 48.87 (Spring Champs cut).  Then, Kristin Cihoski (UNAT) came right back to win again in the 400 Individual Medley (4:18.55, Spring Champs cut) beating out Elizabeth Shaw (NOVA), who set the Meet Record (4:16.41, Spring Champs cut )earlier in Prelims.  On the men's side, Ian Vogt (NOVA) captured the Gold Medal with a 3:58.94 (Spring Champs (18&Y)).  The evening concluded with 800 Freestyle Relays - NOVA Women (Myers, Smith, Zimmerman, Shaw) took first with 7:38.05 and CGBD Men (Harkins, Cross, Harkins, Madaras) followed with another win in 6:51.55 (both Spring Champs cuts).

Saturday
Elizabeth Shaw (NOVA) picked up her first championship of the meet with a Spring Champs cut of 2:00.62 in the 200 Butterfly.  Ian Vogt (NOVA) followed on the men's side with his second championship in a Spring Champs cut of 1:49.66.  The sprints were next ... CGBD's Hannah Davis (23.66, Spring Champs (18&Y) cut) and TPHN's David Walters (20.40, Meet/VSI Record and Spring Champs cut, which broke the oldest VSI SC record still on the books - 22 year-old previous best by Phil Perdue (BRAC), and tied by Brent Hosten (NOVA) in 2000!!)  proved fastest of the bunch.  In the 200 Breaststrokes, Meaghan Holloway (WAC) picked up a second Gold with a Spring Champs cut (2:18.45) and John Vogt (UNAT) set a new Meet Record with his own Spring Champs cut (2:00.35).  Krristin Cihoski (now with TPHN) broke the 13 year-old Meet Record (55.91, Spring Champs cut) and David Wren (NOVA) picked up the win (50.88, Spring Champs (18&Y) cut) in the 100 Backstrokes.  In the 500 Freestyles, Anne Myers (NOVA) continued to roll with another win in 4:53.95 (Spring Champs cut) and David Walters (TPHN) continued to dominate with his third Meet/VSI Record in 4:25.62 (Spring Champs cut).  Another treat followed in the 400 Medley Relays ... PSDN Women (Haley, Harris, McClintock, Potts) added to Thursday's record-breaking performance by blasting the 16 year-old Meet/VSI Record held by NOVA/ODAC with a 3:52.27 (Spring Champs cut) that just edged out WAC (3:52.42), who also broke the same records.  CGBD Men (Madaras, Cross, Wilcox, Harkins) then turned in third Meet Record performance going 3:24.31 (Spring Champs cut).

Sunday

The afternoon distance events finished in Finals with Anne Myers (NOVA) completing her trifecta by winning the 1000 Freestyle in 10:03.84 (Spring Champs (18&Y) cut) and Sam Martinette (NOVA) earning the win and a Spring Champs cut with a 9:21.85.  In the 200 Backstrokes, Kristin Cihoski (TPHN) (1:50.20, Spring Champs cut), her fourth, and David Wren (NOVA) (2:01.76, Spring Champs (18&Y) cut)), his second,  picked up the wins.  The 100 Freestyle winners were Hannah Davis (CGBD) (52.14, Spring Champs cut), her second, and David Walters (TPHN) (44.30, Spring Champs cut), his fifth championship and sweep of the four Freestyle events and Meet/VSI Records!  The 200 IM winners were TPHN's Kristin Cihoski (2:02.31, Spring Champs cut), her fifth, and TPHN's David Walters (1:50.58 Spring Champs cut), his sixth, setting a new Meet Record.  The meet concluded with exciting and record-breaking 400 Freestyle Relays ... QDD Women (Perks, Cavalier, Alles, Harrison) set a new Meet Record in 3:30.18 (Spring Champs cut) and CCA Men (Stowers, Chandler, Anderson, Lynch) set a new Meet/VSI Record in 3:06.30.
NOVA swept the Women's, Men's and Combined titles!!  Kristin Cihoski (TPHN) and David Walters (TPHN) topped the Individual High Points races!

Record Breakers
Rebecca Kelley (NOVA) broke the 15-16 100 Breaststroke record with a time of 1.03.90 which bested the previous record,
1.04.04, set by Mary Adams (FTE) on 12/16/1999.

Mac Anthony (NOVA) broke the 13-14 50 Freestyle record with a time of 21.73 which bested the previous record,
21.76, set by Evan Gregg (SWAT) on 12/16/2005.

Ian Vogt (NOVA) broke the 15-16 200 Butterfly record with a time of 1.49.05 which bested the previous record,
1.49.65, set by JB Walsh (TAC) on 4/7/2003.

Joel Cross (CGBD) broke the Senior 100 Breaststroke record with a time of 54.51 which bested the previous record,
55.04, set by J.J. Freitag (RVAA) on 4/18/1989.

David Walters (TPHN) broke his own 17-18 50 Freestyle record with a time of 20.40.  This is also a new Senior record which bested the previous record,
20.57 set by Phil Perdue (BRAC) on 02/24/1984 and Brent Holsten (NOVA) on 3/10/2000.

David Walters (TPHN) broke his own 17-18 100 Freestyle record with a time of 44.30.  This is also a new Senior record which he also owned.

David Walters (TPHN) broke his own 17-18 200 Freestyle record with a time of 1.35.07.  This is also a new Senior record which he also owned.

David Walters (TPHN) broke his own 17-18 500 Freestyle record with a time of 4.25.62.  This is also a new Senior record which he also owned.

PSDN Women (Haley, Harris, McClintock, Potts) broke the Senior 400 Medley Relay record with a time of 3.52.27 which bested the previous record,
3.52.51, set by ODAC on 3/21/1990.

CGBD Men (Madaras, Cross, Wilcox, Harkins) broke the Senior 200 Medley Relay record with a time of 1.33.50 which bested the previous record,
1.34.48, set by TPHN on 3/2/2001.

CGBD Men (Cross, Harkins, Richardson, Madaras) broke the Senior 200 Freestyle Relay record with a time of 1.24.10 which bested the previous record,
1.24.41, set by ODAC on 3/16/1998.

CCA Men (Stowers, Chandler, Anderson, Lynch) broke their own 17-18 400 Freestyle Relay record with a time of 3.06.30.  This is also a new Senior record which bested the previous record,
3.06.44, set by TPHN on 3/5/2004.

CCA Men (Stowers, Anderson, Munson, Lynch) broke the 17-18 200 Medley Relay record with a time of 1.36.68, which bested the previous record,
1.37.29, set by PSDN on 12/18/1985.


 

 In other business:

The 2006 Graduating Seniors were recognized in a ceremony prior to Finals on Saturday evening.  Each Senior paraded across the bulkhead and was presented a medal and a rose commemorating their graduation and years in our program.

Paige Endsley (PSDN) was chosen to become the new Junior Athlete Representative.
Lawson Wallace (RAYS) will become the new Senior Athlete Representative when Bryan Pinkston (PSDN) graduates this summer.
