USA Swimming Online Coaching Clinics for June

USA Swimming is offering two FREE online clinics this June.  This is the tenth and eleventh web-based USA Swimming Coaching Clinics.  Participants will watch a PowerPoint presentation given over the internet while listening to the audio of the presentation through an “866” toll free conference call number.

Clinic #1: John Leonard- Becoming a Great Meet Coach

Thursday, June 14, 2007

Coach Leonard will tell you how to become a great swim meet coach.  Topics to be covered include: pre-meet preparation, communication at the meet and post-meet analysis.  This presentation is not just for the novice coach, but also for the experienced senior coach who wants to learn a number of new ideas.

John Leonard is the Executive Director of the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) and has been for the past 21 years.  In addition, he "hobby coaches" a new USA Swimming Team called "SwimFast"  and has, for the past four years, concentrated on coaching beginning swimmers, after a previous 31 years coaching athletes ranging from Olympians to novices.

SwimAtlanta is one of the most successful coach owned programs in the country (both financially and results wise). Coach Davis will share his insights into building the program.

Chris Davis is in his 30th year as co-founder and co-owner of SwimAtlanta where he is the National Team Coach.  He was one of the men's assistant coaches on the 2006 Pan Pacific Championships team.

Cost:  Free. You must pre-register by clicking on the "Enroll" button at the registration site.

How this works (for both clinics):

  • You must register ahead of time for the conference by clicking on the registration link above and enrolling.  Only registered participants will be allowed to view the presentation.  (Once the presentation begins someone will not be allowed to register/enroll)
  • In order to participate you must have access to a computer connected to the internet AND a phone line.  You will listen to the presentation via a toll-free (US) dial up number.
  • Once you register you will be given a link to join the conference on June 14th or June 18th.
  • You should plan on joining 10 minutes prior to the start (however, you will not be allowed to join until 15 minutes prior to the start).
  • You will need to download a small program on your computer to allow you to watch the presentation.  Depending on your internet connection speed this can take anywhere from 1 minute to almost ten minutes (dial up).
  • You will be requested to enter you name and the event password to join the conference.
  • Once you log on to the website (and the small program above has downloaded and launched) to actually watch the PowerPoint presentation, you will be given instructions about the phone number to call to participate in the audio portion, a password, and a meeting ID# that you are to enter on your phone.
  • Some people, in the past, have experienced network firewall problems.  If you are viewing from a work connection this may prevent you from participating.  If you have any problems connecting to the conference, call the WebEx Technical Support number: (866) 569-3239.
  • You will have the ability to submit questions during the conference through a question & answer dialog box.  The questions will be compiled by Tom Avischious at USA Swimming during the presentation.  If there is time, each presenter will try to answer the questions at the conclusion of his presentation.
  • At the conclusion of the presentation Coach Leonard will give instructions on how to receive a copy of his PowerPoint slides.
  • If you are unable to attend, we will record the presentation so it may be purchased and viewed at a later date (for those unable to participate on either Thursday, June 14, or Monday, June 18).
